Sometimes I have to remind myself not to twist the real meaning of "play" to adult-led activities.
Yesterday was a beautiful day. We stopped by a park. In my head, I was like, 'I should have brought a soccer ball, or should I turn around to the dollar store and get some bubbles? Or maybe we can play scavenger hunt—oh, let's use the Cantonese vocabulary list I created earlier.'
Wait. No. I should let go and allow her to have her own free play. She can do as many cartwheels as she wants in the grass, or explore the world in her own way and at her own pace.
I’m not saying don’t play with our kids, or don’t set up things for them to explore. It's a balance.
It is always beautiful to watch her free play.
